How Japan Escapes: Puzzles, Immersion, and Building the Next Experience

Tatz Tokumine

The first real-world escape game event was held in Japan in 2007. Yet nearly two decades later, Japan and the West have developed remarkably different escape room cultures. Why?

This session compares what players in Japan and the West value in escape rooms, and explores how those values have shaped each market. It then considers what we can learn from these different approaches, and how they might help us build the next escape room experience together.

This presentation will be in English. Live Polish translation will be available during the presentation.

BIO:

Tatz is a project director and software architect at ESCAPE, the company behind ESCAPE.ID, a ticketing platform for escape rooms and puzzle-solving events in Japan. He is also an avid backpacker and escape room enthusiast who has traveled to more than 60 countries. To date, he has played more than 1,000 escape games in Japan and around 100 escape rooms outside Japan.

Dariusz Reich

Buy or make it yourself? Building an escape room using ready-made puzzles and your own solutions

Dariusz Reich

During the presentation, I will show a practical comparison of two approaches to building escape rooms: using ready-made puzzles offered by specialized companies and designing and executing everything in-house. I will discuss real costs, implementation time, customization possibilities, and the impact of both solutions on the final quality of the room. I will also present the most common mistakes made when choosing and implementing both solutions and suggest when it is worth choosing ready-made puzzles and when it is better to make them yourself.

This presentation will be in Polish. Live English translation will be available during the presentation.

BIO:

Co-owner of Questrooms in Gdańsk and Sopot. For over a dozen years, along with his team, he has been designing, building, and developing escape rooms, combining proprietary technical solutions with ready-made elements available on the market. He focuses on creating rooms to achieve the best possible effect at reasonable costs. Privately a husband and father.

Day 2 - How to...

2026-11-13

Athena Benisi

Invisible Safety: The Architecture Behind Immersion

Athena Benisi

“As immersive experiences become more ambitious, and larger in size, safety and longevity must evolve alongside creativity.

This presentation will explore how thoughtful architecture, design and long-term planning can create unforgettable escape rooms without compromising player safety, operational reliability, or future adaptability. From hidden safety systems and thoughtful design to durable construction and fail-safe automation, we’ll examine how the strongest immersion is often built on the elements players never see.

The goal is to plant a seed in the industry’s mindset: safety isn’t a constraint on creativity, it is the invisible foundation that allows it to thrive and become ageless!”

This presentation will be in English. Live Polish translation will be available during the presentation.

BIO:

Hello, ER world! My name is Athena, and I’m a designer and the owner of Arkham Escape Rooms in Greece.

Since stepping into my first game in 2014, I’ve experienced more than 500 escape rooms and immersive experiences around the world, yet I still feel the same excitement every time I’m about to enter one.

This excitement led me to create Arkham in 2017, beginning with Witchouse, one of Greece’s early actor-driven horror rooms. In 2026, Arkham is opening its second location, while I continue designing games for events, collaborations, and custom productions.

Alongside escape rooms, I’ve spent over ten years working in construction and design for large corporate companies. This background taught me that the strongest immersion isn’t just creative, it’s carefully built.

Last, but definitely not least, I’m a witch at heart, drawn to the dark and mysterious… so I guess creating worlds was inevitable!”
